Nancy Pelosi’s signature Tahitian pearls. A single strand of gigantic globules from the South Seas, in a subtle range of oyster-shell colors: grey, golden, white, black, mauve, reputed (by a Republican pundit) to cost somewhere between forty and eighty thousand dollars. The necklace, it seems, has launched a bipartisan craze. (Copies, ubiquitous online, albeit much smaller and, I suspect, dye-enhanced, about $5000.)

My favorite Michelle Obama outfit may be the Isabel Toledo skirt and Azzedine Alaia cardigan she wore to lunch at Buckingham Palace. Unlike Carla Bruni, who felt obliged to affect funereal dowdiness in a grey Dior ensemble with a matching pillbox for her introduction to the Queen, FLOTUS came as herself. Oscar de la Renta, among other codgers, disapproved, but Her Majesty looked genuinely delighted.

Confession: Tired of my reading glasses from The Dollar Store, I went to an upscale eyewear boutique and tried on a pair of Sarah Palin’s Kawasaki 704 titanium clear frames (retail price: $340, online for about $250, not counting lenses). Very flattering, and I could see clear down Madison Avenue to Russia.

Loved, loved Madeleine Albright’s “Read My Pins” travelling show of quirky brooches and lapel pins. Might also have been entitled “A Pointed Statement.”

Remember Pat Nixon’s “good Republican cloth coat?” Well two excellent cloth coats, one Republican, one Democratic, both aberrations, unfortunately, deserve special mention. Hillary Clinton’s chic, black wraparound number, with a shawl collar, that flops open to reveal a tapestry print lining; and the lean, elegant white (six-ply cashmere?) coat worn over matching trousers, in which Laura Bush waved goodbye to Washington last January.

Some of us do not see why brainy, butch Rachel Maddow should have to straighten herself up on air, in lip gloss, and a conservative jacket over a dainty camisole, but are heartened when a panning shot of the set offers a glimpse, under the table, of her baggy jeans and high-tops.

Let’s talk about bright red, the color of heroin poppies, fresh wounds, Communist flags, stuffed tomatoes, traffic lights, and political wives. Time for some term limits, ladies. (Okay, I know the semiotics: red is supposed to telegraph “warmth” to female voters.) Jill Biden’s terrific, Reem Acra strapless chiffon Inaugural ballgown, however, gets a pass.

Who first called Sonia Sotomayor’s “Judge Jewelry”? Very clever. My favorites among her impressive collection of hippie earrings are the silver wind chimes. Also worth a footnote: the charming lace collars—Oliver Cromwell meets Whistler’s Mother—that she and Justice Ginsburg wore to the Supreme Court’s opening session.

Fashion Heroine of 2009: Lubna al-Hussein, the Sudanese journalist arrested last July, in a Khartoum restaurant, where she was dining with several women friends, and sentenced to forty lashes—for wearing trousers. She defiantly showed up in court in the same outfit (loose pants, a long tunic, and a headscarf) and told the press: “A woman should be able to wear what she wants and not be publicly whipped for it.” Who says fashion is frivolous?
